Al-Jazari's Elephant Clock from the original manuscript

Introduction

Among the fifty ingenious devices described by Ismail al-Jazari in his 1206 masterpiece The Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices, the Elephant Clock stands out as one of the most ambitious and visually striking. Constructed in the form of a life-sized Asian elephant carrying a canopy, castle, and moving figures, the clock delighted observers with synchronized movements and sounds every half hour — all powered solely by water and gravity.
